A bitter exchange of words erupted overnight between US President Donald Trump and Iranian officials, reigniting tensions in the aftermath of the recent Israel-Iran conflict.
The diplomatic spat began after Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei took to social media to declare victory over Israel following 12 days of fighting and to criticise the United States. Khamenei’s remarks, intended to project strength, drew an immediate and forceful response from Trump.
Trump Slams Khamenei’s Victory Claims
In a lengthy statement on his social media platform, Trump dismissed Khamenei’s comments as falsehoods, accusing Iran’s leader of lying about the outcome of the conflict.
“Khamenei knows his statement is a lie — it is not so,” Trump wrote. “His nuclear infrastructure has been decimated.”
Trump also revealed that, during the conflict, he had ordered Israeli aircraft en route to Iran to stand down, hinting at his involvement in de-escalation efforts. However, he warned that Iran faces a bleak future if its leadership continues its current path.
“I was considering easing sanctions to give Iran a chance to recover,” Trump added. “But following these baseless and hostile claims, I’ve halted all work on sanction relief. It will only get worse for them.”
Iranian Foreign Minister Fires Back
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi issued a sharp response, condemning Trump’s rhetoric and warning against disrespecting Iran’s leadership.
“The Great and Powerful Iranian people, who showed the world that the Israeli regime had no choice but to run to ‘Daddy’ to avoid being flattened by our missiles, do not take kindly to threats and insults,” Araghchi stated.
He further urged Trump to “put aside the disrespectful and unacceptable tone towards Iran’s Supreme Leader.”
Context: Familiar Pattern of Hostile Exchanges
The verbal confrontation is the latest in a long-running pattern of hostile rhetoric between Washington and Tehran. Despite suffering heavy losses from Israeli airstrikes, Iran has sought to portray the recent conflict as a victory, while the US and Israel maintain that significant damage was inflicted on Iran’s military and nuclear infrastructure.
Trump, known for his unfiltered political messaging on social media, has frequently used such platforms to criticise Iran and its leadership.
While the military confrontation between Israel and Iran has subsided following a ceasefire on June 24, tensions in the region remain high, and diplomatic relations between the US and Iran continue to be fraught with hostility.
