An Irish MMA fighter, Curtis, with a 6-4 record and experience in Bellator and Cage Warriors ring, was brought to Belfast’s Royal Victoria Hospital following the incident.
A fellow fighter, Leah McCourt, took to social media to share a detailed statement, revealing the grim reality of Curtis’s condition. She disclosed that he now faces paralysis in both legs and his left arm, painting a sad picture of the toll the incident has taken on him.
Describing the incident as life-altering, McCourt explained that it occurred during a routine training session on January 11th. Curtis suffered a broken back, broken neck, and dislocated spine, with additional trauma inflicted on his spinal cord, marking the severity of the damage.
The urgency of the situation led to an emergency surgery at the Royal in Belfast, where Curtis remains with no movement in his legs or left arm. The uncertainty looms over his future as he is expected to spend at least five months in the hospital, followed by an undetermined period under the care of a specialist spinal team.
McCourt, acknowledging Curtis’ infectious and positive outlook on life, highlighted the distressing reality he faces. Despite the challenges, she emphasized his determination and mindset to conquer the hurdles before him, showcasing his resilience.
Currently, in the ICU, Curtis awaits a potential transfer to a spinal ward when conditions improve. McCourt expressed gratitude for the support from a tight-knit circle of family and friends surrounding Curtis and his loved ones.
As the gravity of the situation sinks in, McCourt acknowledged that Curtis will never be able to return to the sport he dedicated his life to since the age of 11 – MMA. His passion for fighting and training will forever be altered, adding a poignant layer to the adversity he now confronts.
