A devastating incident unfolded in Jaywick as a woman named Esther Martin, 68 tragically lost her life after being viciously attacked by two dogs. Police responded to the distressing scene at a residence on Hillman Avenue following a call shortly after 4 pm on Saturday.
The victim, who was reportedly visiting her 11-year-old grandson, succumbed to her injuries on-site. A 39-year-old man from Jaywick, identified as being acquainted with the victim, has been apprehended on suspicion of dangerous dog offences and is currently in police custody.
Essex Police have initiated investigations into the harrowing incident, including efforts to determine the dogs’ breed. Authorities have urged the public to refrain from speculating as they collaborate with experts in this matter.
Chief Superintendent Glen Pavelin commended the swift action of the officers on-site, who ensured the community’s safety by promptly addressing the situation. Both dogs responsible for the attack were euthanized within the residence upon the arrival of law enforcement personnel.
Witnesses from the neighbourhood described the distressing sounds preceding the incident, with screams echoing for approximately 10 minutes. A resident, Lucy Shaw, recounted the chilling moment when the neighbourhood was filled with the alarming noise of barking and screaming, akin to that of a child in distress.
Mike Coleman, another neighbour, vividly recalled the panic and urgency exhibited by an individual at the scene, whose actions prompted a swift response from law enforcement.
The breed of the dogs involved remains under investigation, although concerns have been raised following the recent enforcement of a ban on XL bully-type dogs in England and Wales. This legislative measure, implemented due to a series of dog attacks, now makes ownership of such dogs without an exemption certificate criminal. The ban, effective since December 31, 2023, aims to regulate the ownership and handling of these large bulldog-type American breeds, enforcing stringent measures to ensure public safety.
As the investigation unfolds, the tragic loss of Esther Martin serves as a sad reminder of the potential dangers posed by aggressive dogs and the importance of responsible pet ownership. The swift response by law enforcement underscores the commitment to ensuring public safety in the wake of such incidents. As communities grapple with the aftermath of this heartbreaking event, discussions surrounding dog ownership regulations and safety measures will likely amplify, emphasizing the need for collective vigilance and adherence to existing laws to prevent such tragedies.
