Milan, Italy – A man has died in a shocking incident at Milan Il Caravaggio International Airport (Bergamo) after reportedly being sucked into the engine of a passenger plane preparing for departure.
The incident occurred at approximately 10:20 am local time on Monday as a Volotea Airlines Airbus A319, operating flight V7-3511 to Asturias, Spain, was on the taxiway. Airport authorities immediately suspended all flight operations as emergency services responded to the scene.
In a statement to M10News, a Volotea spokesperson confirmed the incident involved their aircraft, which had 154 passengers and six crew on board at the time. The airline expressed condolences and confirmed the individual who died was not affiliated with Volotea or on board the aircraft.

“Volotea regrets to confirm that one of its aircraft… was involved in an incident at Milan-Bergamo Airport… Initial findings indicate that one person who was not onboard the flight and has no affiliation with the company sustained serious injuries,” the airline said.
The airline is working with Italian authorities and has offered psychological support to passengers and crew affected by the trauma. A toll-free number has also been made available for family and friends seeking information.
According to Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera, the victim—a man believed to be about 35 years old—reportedly ran onto the runway moments before being pulled into one of the plane’s engines. It remains unclear whether he breached security from outside or was already within the airport perimeter.
Footage from the airport showed emergency personnel gathered near the aircraft’s left engine. The man is believed to have died instantly on the runway, with investigators now reviewing how he was able to approach the plane.
The airport operator, SACBO, confirmed in a post on social media that flight operations were halted following “a problem that occurred on the taxiway,” and added that an investigation is underway.
Ryanair, which also operates from Milan Bergamo, reported delays and cancellations on multiple flights. The Ryanair service to Dublin, originally scheduled for 11:10 am, was delayed until 12:22 pm. Other flights to Mahon, Katowice, Prague, Naples, and Malta were also affected.
Milan Bergamo is Italy’s third-busiest airport, handling over eight million passengers annually. It is a key hub for budget airlines including Ryanair.
The incident has raised serious questions about airport security protocols and how an individual could access an active runway.
Authorities have not yet released the identity of the deceased, and investigations are ongoing.
