Jeff Walz, the older brother of Democratic vice presidential candidate Tim Walz, has publicly criticised his brother’s political stance and hinted at a possible endorsement of former President Donald Trump. Jeff Walz’s comments came in a series of Facebook posts that have garnered significant attention this week.
On Friday evening, Jeff Walz, who resides in Florida, strongly opposed Tim Walz’s political views, referring to him as “not the type of character you want making decisions about your future.” Jeff’s remarks were made in response to a Facebook user’s suggestion that he endorse Trump.
“I’ve thought long and hard about doing something like that! I’m torn between that and just keeping my family out of it,” Jeff wrote, receiving nearly 450 likes for his comment.
The estrangement between the Walz brothers is notable. Jeff revealed that he and Tim have not communicated for eight years and were not informed of Tim’s selection as Kamala Harris’s running mate in advance. “My family wasn’t notified that he was selected,” Jeff noted.
Jeff Walz’s criticism gained traction after conservative activist Laura Loomer highlighted a March 30, 2023, Facebook post in which Jeff denounced Trump’s indictment by a Manhattan grand jury. In that post, which has over 500 likes, Jeff referred to the indictment as evidence that the U.S. had become a “third-world banana republic.”

Records show that Jeff, a registered Republican, donated $20 to Trump’s 2016 campaign but did not contribute to Tim Walz’s political efforts. Jeff has declined media interviews, stating, “I am not doing interviews.”
Social media profiles reveal that Jeff enjoys sail fishing and family activities, including visits to Disney World. He and his wife Laurie previously owned So Fine Music, a musical instrument store in Inverness, Florida. Despite their familial ties, Jeff and Laurie appear to maintain connections with other members of the Walz family through social media.
Both brothers have had legal issues; Tim Walz was arrested for drunk driving in 1995, while Jeff Walz was convicted of misdemeanour retail theft in 2001, receiving six months of probation.
Tim Walz, known for his progressive policies as Minnesota’s governor, has faced criticism for his approach to COVID-19 lockdowns and his support for gender-affirming care legislation. Representative Nicole Malliotakis (R-NY) criticised Tim Walz’s policies, arguing they could harm the country’s future.

Jeff Walz’s discontent with his brother follows a broader trend of family members publicly opposing prominent political figures. Vice President Kamala Harris, former President Barack Obama, and Donald Trump have all faced criticism from relatives.

Representative Lauren Boebert (R-CO) suggested that Jeff Walz’s views should be more widely reported, stating, “If the mainstream media has no problem amplifying the voices of Mary Trump and the family of RFK Jr. who speak out against Republicans, then the American people deserve to hear more from Tim Walz’s brother.”
Neither the Harris-Walz campaign nor Tim Walz’s office has commented on the situation.
