A father filled with fear hurriedly took his daughter to the hospital after her lung burst due to excessive vaping, equivalent to smoking 400 cigarettes a week.
Mark Blythe was overwhelmed with emotion when he received a call informing him that his 17-year-old daughter, Kyla, had collapsed and turned blue during a sleepover on May 11.
Up until that morning, Kyla believed her vaping habit was harmless. However, the excessive vaping had caused a small air blister, known as a pulmonary bleb, on her lungs to burst, resulting in a collapsed lung.
Kyla underwent a lengthy five-and-a-half-hour surgery to remove part of her lung after nearly experiencing cardiac arrest.
Mark expressed his terror, stating, “It was a horrifying experience for me. I cried like a baby. It was extremely difficult to witness. I have been by her side throughout the entire ordeal.”
“The situation was life-threatening. It truly posed a threat to her life because she was on the verge of cardiac arrest that Friday.”
“They said she turned blue. They believed she was gone.”
Kyla began vaping at the age of 15 after seeing her classmates pick it up. She was consuming an entire 4,000-puff vape each week, which is equivalent to smoking 400 cigarettes or 57 cigarettes per day.
Although she believed it to be harmless, the traumatic experience has now deterred her from the habit.
Kyla shared, “When I was 15, vaping started to become popular. All my friends were doing it. I thought it was harmless and that I would be fine.”
“Every day, I would use the 4,000-puff vapes and finish them within a week.”
“I genuinely believed they were harmless and wouldn’t harm anyone, despite seeing numerous warnings. I think many people share the same perspective.”
“But now, I won’t go near them. The situation has truly frightened me away from vaping.”
“I was terrified. We initially thought we would only be at the hospital for a few hours, but ended up staying for two weeks, undergoing surgeries and facing all of this.”
Last November, Kyla had been rushed to the hospital with a suspected heart attack, which an X-ray later revealed to be a hole in her lung.
