A 14-year-old footballer has died after suffering a cardiac arrest while playing in a youth match in France.
Ousmane Diaby, a player for Jeunesse Aubervilliers, collapsed on the pitch during a game against Auxerre.
Emergency responders rushed to his aid and attempted resuscitation before he was airlifted to a hospital in Dijon. Despite their efforts, Diaby passed away on Wednesday.
Jeunesse Aubervilliers confirmed the teenager’s death in a statement, expressing deep sorrow and paying tribute to his character and dedication.
“It is with immense sorrow that we announce the tragic death of our dear Ousmane Diaby,” the club said.
“He was a child with a huge heart, always smiling, helpful and respectful. He volunteered with our youngest teams and supported his family every day.”
The club has launched a fundraiser to support Diaby’s family with funeral costs. So far, it has raised over £7,600.
French Football Federation (FFF) president Philippe Diallo extended his condolences to the family and the club.
“I send my most sincere condolences to the relatives of Ousmane and the club’s management,” he said.
A minute’s silence will be held in Diaby’s memory before Jeunesse Aubervilliers’ Under-16 team plays their next fixture.
