Switzerland emerged as the winner of the most controversial Eurovision Song Contest in history
Switzerland has won the Eurovision Song Contest 2024 despite the chaos and division surrounding the event.
Just before the live show in Malmö, Sweden, jurors withdrew, refusing to announce points, and entrants used rehearsals to make powerful statements.
Additionally, performers were absent from flag parades. In a surprising turn, The Netherlands’ entrant, Joost Klein, was disqualified from the Grand Final due to a “disproportionate” punishment stemming from a gesture made by the camera.
Adding to the drama, Ireland’s entrant, Bambie Thug, missed their dress rehearsal citing an urgent situation requiring attention from organizers.
France’s entry, Slimane, interrupted their dress run to call for peace before leaving the stage. Meanwhile, Greece’s Marina Satti and Switzerland’s Nemo also missed the flag parade.
Furthermore, two jurors, Alessandra Mele of Norway and Finnish runner-up Käärijä relinquished their responsibilities, citing discomfort with the point-giving process.
Protests outside the arena demanded the removal of Israel from the competition, adding pressure on organizers.
Despite the chaotic lead-up, 25 countries participated, with Sweden hosting for the first time since 2016, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of Abba’s win in 1974..
Representing the UK, Olly Alexander presented “Dizzy,” while Ireland emerged as a surprise favorite, reaching their first Eurovision final in six years. Controversy loomed over the participation of Israel’s Eden Golan amid the Gaza conflict, prompting calls for boycotts.
Switzerland emerged victorious, defeating Croatia in a tight contest. Nemo’s victory with “The Code” was met with applause and waving flags.
The non-binary singer, adorned in a pink skirt and fluffy jumper, delivered a memorable performance on a tipping metal disc.
The event was marred by controversy, with boycotts and disdain expressed toward organizers. Protesters, including climate activist Greta Thunberg, demonstrated outside Malmö Arena, resulting in several detentions. Inside, Israel’s entry faced audible boos during their performance.
