Summer 2024: Amalfi Coast Getting Its Own Airport, Enhancing Access to Italy’s Beloved Destination!
Italy’s Amalfi Coast attracts five million tourists annually due to its charming pastel-painted villages and lemon grove terraces. However, reaching this picturesque coastline has historically been challenging.
The previous route to Amalfi and Positano required a time-consuming combination of trains and buses after flying into Naples airport.
2024 brings exciting news for travellers as Salerno Costa d’Amalfi Airport introduces international flights to this UNESCO-designated region, simplifying access.
Emergence of Salerno Costa d’Amalfi Airport:
This airport is 45 kilometres southeast of Amalfi and 21 kilometres from Salerno. It was first built in 1926 and has served different purposes. The airport closed in 2016 but is set to reopen for commercial flights in July 2024 while renovating. A new passenger terminal is currently under construction and is expected to be completed by 2027.
Overview of Airlines and Destinations:
Spanish budget airline Volotea will lead commercial flights from Salerno Costa d’Amalfi Airport starting July 11th. They have announced four routes connecting the coastline with popular Italian destinations Cagliari, Verona, Catania, and Nantes in France. Flights to Nantes and Cagliari will commence in July, while Verona and Catania routes are scheduled for September.
Future Prospects and Development:
Authorities foresee continued development until 2043 to accommodate up to six million passengers annually. While welcomed by local tourism and hospitality businesses, concerns persist regarding the potential impact of increased visitor numbers on the area’s infrastructure and natural environment.
Environmental Considerations:
The region’s ability to sustainably accommodate tourists while preserving its natural beauty is being questioned.
Infrastructure Preparation:
Efforts are being made to ensure that the region’s infrastructure can support the expected increase in visitors, with a focus on transportation, accommodation, and tourist facilities.
Economic Impact:
The development of Salerno Costa d’Amalfi Airport and increased accessibility to the Amalfi Coast are expected to have significant economic benefits for the region, particularly for tourism-related businesses.
Cultural Preservation:
Amidst the excitement of increased accessibility, there is a commitment to preserving the Amalfi Coast’s unique cultural heritage and character, ensuring that sustainable tourism practices are implemented.
Community Engagement:
Efforts are underway to balance economic growth with environmental conservation and cultural preservation, with active involvement of local communities in discussions about the region’s future development.
In 2024, the Salerno Costa d’Amalfi Airport will open, a significant achievement in making travel to Italy’s Amalfi Coast more convenient and accessible for tourists. This development has sparked discussions about sustainable tourism and responsible development, which are crucial in preserving the beauty of this destination.
