A stowaway was found dead inside the landing gear of an American Airlines plane after it landed in the United States.
The aircraft touched down at Charlotte Douglas International Airport in North Carolina shortly after 9 am local time on Sunday.
Discovery Made by Maintenance Crew
Authorities said the plane had recently arrived from Europe when maintenance crews discovered the body.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) confirmed the stowaway was pronounced dead at the scene by airport division officers.
Police Launch Investigation
Homicide unit detectives responded promptly to investigate the incident, while crime scene search teams collected physical evidence from the landing gear compartment.
Representatives from CMPD’s operations command and the Mecklenburg EMS Agency (Medic) also assisted at the scene.
Detectives Seek Information
CMP emphasised that their homicide unit is leading the investigation and that detectives are seeking information from anyone who may have relevant details.
“The investigation into this case is active and ongoing,” a CMPD spokesperson said.
Airport Responds
Airport authorities confirmed they were aware of the discovery and expressed their condolences regarding the death.
A statement from the airport added: “We are deeply saddened by this news and will support the CMPD investigation as needed.”
Officials reassured the public that airport operations are continuing as normal despite the incident.
American Airlines Comment Pending
American Airlines was contacted for comment on the matter, but has not stated at this time.
Risks of Stowing Away
Stowaway deaths in aircraft landing gear compartments, while rare, are a known hazard due to extreme cold and lack of oxygen at high altitudes.
Investigation Continues
Authorities continue to investigate how the individual gained access to the plane and whether any additional safety measures are needed to prevent similar tragedies.
