A Spirit Airlines flight was struck by gunfire while attempting to land at Toussaint Louverture International Airport in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, on Monday, leaving at least one flight attendant wounded.
The incident occurred as the plane departed from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and approached the airport.
According to sources, multiple bullets hit the aircraft during its descent. A bullet grazed a flight attendant, but they did not suffer life-threatening injuries.
Local media outlet Media Libre Haiti obtained footage showing several bullet holes in the plane’s overhead bins and a door. Following the attack, the flight was diverted to an airport in the Dominican Republic for safety reasons, and all other commercial flights were grounded at the Port-au-Prince airport.
This shooting incident comes just two weeks after Spirit Airlines temporarily suspended flights to Haiti after gang members fired on a United Nations helicopter flying nearby. At the time, the airline prioritized the safety of its passengers and crew members, stating it would temporarily halt service to the capital.
Spirit Airlines has not yet responded to requests for comment regarding the latest incident.
