Gareth Southgate has ruled out considering Mason Greenwood for his England squad heading to Euro 2024.
However, he has not entirely closed the door on a potential return beyond this summer’s competition.
Greenwood, who left Manchester United for a season-long loan at Getafe, hasn’t played for United since facing legal issues in January 2022. Despite having all charges against him dropped in February, Southgate remains cautious about reintegrating him into the national team.
Greenwood has performed well during his loan spell at Getafe, tallying eight goals and five assists in 26 appearances. Although he received one cap for England in 2020, Southgate believes his presence could disrupt team focus ahead of the Euros.
Southgate emphasized that focusing on Greenwood’s career abroad is the priority, hinting at a potential return to the England squad next season. Despite Greenwood’s past England appearance, his involvement in breaching Covid quarantine guidelines alongside Phil Foden further complicates his situation.
While Greenwood is also eligible to represent Jamaica, the national team’s coach expressed interest in having him onboard, leaving the decision to the player. Meanwhile, Manchester United has set a £40 million valuation for Greenwood amid reported interest from Barcelona and Atletico Madrid.
