South African police killed six criminal suspects in an early morning raid near Durban, targeting a gang accused of house invasions and killings. The country, which is listed among the most dangerous in the world, had a spike in crime, with three murders per hour recorded in the first three months of 2023.
Upon reaching a residence in Inanda, a crime-ridden township northwest of Durban, police faced a barrage of bullets. They successfully apprehended three suspects, including a woman and two men. Police Minister Bheki Cele, visiting the area, reported the discovery of pricey alcohol and technology in the house.
The intense shootout lasted approximately 25 minutes, during which police uncovered two rifles, a shotgun, and a vehicle stolen in December. Minister Cele expressed gratitude that the police survived, commending their efforts.
This incident follows a similar one in September, when police thwarted a cash-in-transit heist, resulting in the deaths of eighteen individuals in the country’s northeast.
