South African Football Association President Danny Jordaan Arrested on Fraud Charges
The President of the South African Football Association (SAFA), Danny Jordaan, has been arrested over fraud allegations involving R1.3 million (approximately N52 million).
The charges allege that Jordaan misappropriated SAFA funds for personal expenses. Alongside him, SAFA’s Chief Financial Officer, Gronie Hluyo, and former journalist-turned-businessman Trevor Neethling are also facing charges. The three are set to appear in the Specialised Commercial Crime Court in Palm Ridge on Wednesday, according to ‘News24’.
Jordaan revealed that he was arrested at his home, explaining, “I did not hand myself over; the police came to my house and brought me to this court.” Earlier, Jordaan had filed for an interdict with the Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg to stop the arrest, with a hearing scheduled for Thursday. However, police moved forward with the arrest before the court ruling could be issued.
The Hawks, South Africa’s elite investigative unit, confirmed the arrests, stating they acted on warrants issued previously. The accusations against Jordaan focus on the alleged misuse of SAFA resources from 2014 to 2018. Colonel Katlego Mogale, a Hawks spokesperson, stated that Jordaan is suspected of hiring a private security firm and a public relations company with SAFA funds without obtaining board approval.
“The president is also reported to have violated SAFA statutes, leading to an actual loss of R1.3 million,” Mogale stated. Earlier in March, the Hawks raided SAFA’s Nasrec offices in Johannesburg, confiscating electronic devices and documents, including a laptop, external hard drives, USB drives, and other records connected to the investigation.
