Emily Chaplin recently shared a cautionary tale about Ryanair’s strict baggage policies. She observed numerous passengers being required to pay £46 before boarding a flight.
During her journey to Tenerife on May 6, Emily witnessed passengers being unexpectedly charged extra fees for luggage that did not meet the airline’s requirements.
Upon reaching Birmingham Airport, Emily noticed a separate line where passengers had to measure their carry-on bags.
Despite her bag barely fitting into the measuring box, Emily avoided the additional charge.
While she had prepared by purchasing a backpack of the correct size and meticulously packing her belongings, Emily was surprised by the strict enforcement of the rules.
Unfortunately, not all passengers were as fortunate as Emily.
Several individuals were forced to pay the £46 fee after their bags exceeded the allowed dimensions.
One passenger even had to remove items from her bag to redistribute the weight and avoid the charge.
Although some managed to escape the fee, others were not as lucky, like a group of women travelling to Tenerife.
The group had mistakenly added the bags to their return flight booking but not the outgoing one, leading to a dispute over the additional charge.
Emily heard the group had included the bags for the return flight but not the outgoing one, yet they still had to pay for it.
While upgrading to Priority Boarding and bringing a giant cabin bag can cost as little as £6, those who don’t comply may face charges up to £46 at the gate.
This comes after a pair of German tourists travelling around Europe found a clever way to avoid Ryanair’s expensive luggage charges – and have a comfortable flight in the process.
TikTokers Madeleine and Sophia, known as @roadbunnies, shared a video on social media showing them using a pillowcase as a makeshift suitcase.
