WASHINGTON / MOSCOW – U.S. President Donald Trump has reignited international concerns over nuclear escalation after revealing he had ordered two nuclear submarines into “the appropriate regions” near Russia—prompting a sharp response from the Kremlin and renewed warnings about global nuclear risks.
In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump claimed the move was in direct response to “foolish and inflammatory statements” from Russian officials, as the self-imposed August 8 deadline he has set for Russia to end its war in Ukraine rapidly approaches.
“I have ordered two Nuclear Submarines to be positioned in the appropriate regions, just in case these foolish and inflammatory statements are more than just that,” Trump wrote.
“Words are very important, and can often lead to unintended consequences. I hope this will not be one of those instances.”
The comments have triggered a fresh wave of international unease, particularly as Trump— engaging in personal nuclear rhetoric while pressuring Moscow with sanctions threats and military posturing.

Kremlin Responds: “Extreme Caution Required”
In response, the Kremlin issued a formal statement cautioning all global leaders against nuclear brinkmanship:
“Russia is very attentive to nuclear non-proliferation. We believe that everyone must be extremely careful with nuclear rhetoric.”
Yet observers noted that Moscow’s calls for restraint come even as its officials and state-aligned media personalities have openly threatened nuclear strikes against Western nations.
Medvedev Warns of Doomsday System
Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has issued a cryptic warning aimed at the U.S., referencing the so-called “Dead Hand”—a Soviet-era automatic nuclear retaliation system.
“Remember how dangerous the fabled ‘Dead Hand’ can be,” Medvedev wrote on Telegram, adding that “the loss of a nuclear power in a conventional war could provoke a nuclear war. Nuclear powers have not lost major conflicts on which their fate depends.”
Medvedev’s remarks were widely interpreted as a thinly veiled threat that Russia could escalate to nuclear war if its military position in Ukraine deteriorates beyond repair.
Russian State TV: Britain Targeted
Adding to tensions, Russian state-funded broadcasters have continued issuing provocative statements. One of the most incendiary came from MP and army reservist General Andrei Gurulev, who said:
“If there is no Britain, there is no problem.”
Such statements have become more common on Russian airwaves since the 2022 invasion of Ukraine, as military analysts and politicians seek to deter NATO intervention.
Trump Hardens Stance on Putin
Trump, who has a complex history with Russian President Vladimir Putin, has recently taken a noticeably harder tone. During a July campaign event, when asked if he had “given up on Putin,” Trump said:
“I’m disappointed in him, but I’m not done with him.”
When pressed further on whether he trusts Putin, Trump replied:
“I trust almost no one.”
He also recounted a conversation with former First Lady Melania Trump:
“I go home, I tell the first lady, ‘You know, I spoke to Vladimir today. We had a wonderful conversation.’ She said, ‘Oh, really? Another city was just hit.’”
The anecdote was interpreted by analysts as a sign that Trump’s inner circle is urging him to abandon his long-defended relationship with the Russian leader.
August 8 Deadline Looms
Trump’s ultimatum to Russia—demanding an end to the war in Ukraine by August 8—has not been officially endorsed by the U.S. government. Nevertheless, it has raised diplomatic alarm, with some NATO allies reportedly pressing Washington for clarification on the submarines’ deployment.

Whether Trump’s high-risk approach leads to concessions, confrontation, or unintended escalation remains unclear. What is certain, however, is that his direct engagement in foreign policy—while out of office—has injected volatility into an already precarious geopolitical standoff.
