Republicans Secure House Majority, Gaining Full Control of Government as Trump Prepares for Presidency
Washington, D.C. — The Republican Party secured a majority in the House of Representatives on Wednesday, cementing GOP control over all three branches of government as President-elect Donald Trump prepares to take office in January.
The decisive seat was won by Rep. Juan Ciscomani (R-Ariz.) in Arizona’s 6th Congressional District, giving Republicans at least 218 seats in the new Congress, according to the Associated Press, with nine races still undecided.
Since Election Day, Republicans have flipped six seats, including critical victories in Pennsylvania, North Carolina, and Michigan, while Democrats picked up just one seat in the House.
The GOP’s recent wins are Ryan Mackenzie and Robert Bresnahan in Pennsylvania’s 7th and 8th districts, Addison McDowell, Brad Knott, and Tim Moore in North Carolina’s 6th, 13th, and 14th districts, and Tom Barrett in Michigan’s 7th District.
National Republican Congressional Committee Chairman Richard Hudson (R-N.C.) praised the achievement. “They said it couldn’t be done. But the American people have spoken,” Hudson said in a statement following Ciscomani’s victory, calling it the realisation of his mission to hold a Republican House majority. On Tuesday’s Capitol steps, Hudson declared it was “morning again in America.”
While the exact margin of the House majority remains uncertain with races outstanding, Republicans are projected to hold a slim advantage come January. President-elect Trump has already selected three House Republicans—Reps. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.), Mike Waltz (R-Fla.), and Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.)—to serve in his administration, which may temporarily impact the GOP’s House majority until replacements are sworn in.
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) confirmed Gaetz’s resignation on Wednesday, noting his hope to fill the seat by the new Congress’s swearing-in on January 3rd.
Wednesday also marked Trump’s first in-person meeting with GOP House members since his historic victory over Vice President Kamala Harris.
Following the event, Hudson indicated the GOP’s intent to rally around Trump’s “America First agenda” and pursue policy changes.
“Americans are fed up with extreme Democrats who threw open the border, set inflation on fire, and invited drugs and crime to flood our communities,” Hudson stated. “With a Republican House majority, President Donald Trump back in the White House, and a new Senate Majority – help is on the way.”
The GOP also gained control of the Senate, flipping four seats in Montana, West Virginia, Ohio, and Pennsylvania, giving Republicans a 53-47 advantage. On Wednesday, Senate Republicans elected Sen.
John Thune (R-S.D.) as their new majority leader, succeeding Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), who has held the role longer than any leader in Senate history.
With unified control, Republicans are poised to advance their legislative agenda as Trump prepares to assume office. At the same time, Hudson, Thune, and other party leaders signal an era of new conservative priorities in Congress.
