Reddit, the popular online discussion platform, experienced significant outages and errors on Wednesday, preventing users from accessing content.
The issues began around 4 p.m. ET on August 28, with over 76,000 error reports logged on monitoring site Downdetector. Users encountered messages such as “We have encountered an error.
Please try again later,” and “We could not load the content for this page.”
Reddit acknowledged the problem on its status page at 4:16 p.m. ET, indicating “Degraded Performance” and stating that the issue was under investigation. The platform has a history of technical difficulties, including a significant outage in August 2022 and another five hours in March 2023.
Reddit launched an IPO in March 2024, with over 100,000 active communities globally. Despite reporting a 21% increase in revenue to $804.0 million in 2023, the company still posted a net loss of $90.8 million, though this was an improvement from the previous year.
For the second quarter of 2024, Reddit reported 91.2 million daily active users, a 51% year-over-year increase. Revenue was up 54% to $281.2 million, narrowing its net loss to $10.1 million.
The ongoing technical issues come as Reddit is working to solidify its position as a leading platform for online discussions following its IPO earlier this year.
