BBC racing commentator John Hunt has returned to the airwaves just days after enduring the harrowing trial and sentencing of Kyle Clifford, the man convicted of murdering his wife and two daughters.
During the emotional court proceedings, Mr Hunt delivered a powerful 1,700-word statement, vowing to honour his family’s memory.
He described his loved ones as his ‘three beautiful mockingbirds’ and expressed his determination to carry on despite his immense grief.
Mr Hunt said: “Whilst I am badly damaged, I am determined to see my future, surrounded by so many amazing people.”
He credited his late daughter Hannah for giving him a “second chance” at life, saying:
“Do you think after what she did for me, I will slight her memory and example by just giving up?”
Despite the painful ordeal, Mr Hunt returned to work on BBC Radio 5 Live on Friday, covering the Cheltenham Festival.
Presenter Mark Chapman introduced him by saying: “John is in his usual commentary position yet again.”
Mr Hunt replied: “I am thinking about the individuals illuminating this sport. Nothing else matters, Mark.”
Referencing the prestigious racing event, Mr Hunt reflected on Best Mate’s victory in his first Cheltenham coverage 30 years ago.
He praised Galopin des Champs, comparing the horse to Antoine Dupont in terms of sporting excellence.
During the trial, prosecutors revealed that Kyle Clifford meticulously planned the attack after his ex-girlfriend Louise Hunt ended their relationship.
Clifford gained access to the family home by deceiving Mr Hunt’s wife, Carol Hunt, before fatally stabbing her. He then waited for Louise, whom he restrained, raped, and killed with a crossbow. Finally, he shot Hannah Hunt when she returned home from work.
In his emotional statement, Mr Hunt addressed Clifford directly, saying:
“The impact of what you have done will be taken to my grave, but on the way there, I want you to know that I stand strong before you today.”
He added: “As you are consigned to a fate far greater than death, I can draw on the love and strength that I still feel from the girls in every moment of every day. I am lucky.”
Colleagues praised Mr Hunt’s resilience, and fellow commentator Darren Owen said, “All of us are behind him 100% of the way.”
Talksport commentator Rupert Bell added: “He is an outstanding commentator, not just in racing. I hope Cheltenham allows him to feel the love and appreciation of everyone around him.”
