Quebec Government Freezes Immigration Applications Amid Rising Influx of Newcomers
The Quebec government has announced the suspension of applications for permanent residency from two immigration streams due to the rising number of newcomers the province is struggling to accommodate.
Immigration Minister Jean-François Roberge stated that the freeze affects the Quebec Experience Program, which provides a pathway to permanent residency for international students who graduate there. The Regular Skilled Worker Program is also included in this suspension.
The suspension of these immigration streams, a proactive measure, will remain in effect until at least June 2025. This decision comes as part of a broader effort by the Quebec government to manage its immigration policies more effectively, ensuring a balanced and sustainable influx of newcomers.
Earlier this year, the government implemented a six-month freeze on specific temporary foreign worker applications in Montreal, a clear indication of the government’s commitment to balancing immigration with the pressure on local resources.
In addition to freezing these programs, the Quebec government has also introduced legislation to cap the number of international students allowed in the province. This measure reflects ongoing concerns about the impact of high immigration levels on Quebec’s infrastructure and social services.
The province’s government has been engaged in discussions with Ottawa regarding immigration powers. Quebec has been vocal in its demands for increased authority to decide who can settle in the province and has urged the federal government to facilitate the relocation of asylum seekers to other regions of Canada.
