Putin to Visit China in May for Talks with Xi Jinping Following Re-election

Russian President Vladimir Putin is scheduled to travel to China in May for discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping. According to five sources familiar with the matter, this potential visit could be Putin’s first overseas trip since his reelection.

While Western governments have criticized Putin’s reelection as unfair and undemocratic, China, India, and North Korea have extended congratulations to the longtime leader, underscoring the geopolitical divides that have widened since Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022.
Confirming the plans, one source shared that Putin’s visit to China is indeed on the agenda, with four other sources independently verifying this information.
The trip will likely occur in the latter half of May, preceding Xi’s planned journey to Europe.
When asked about the report, the Kremlin responded that details regarding Putin’s visits would be disclosed closer to the date. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated that preparations for several presidential visits and high-level contacts are underway.
The partnership between China and Russia, characterized as “no limits,” was declared in February 2022 during Putin’s visit to Beijing, shortly before the invasion of Ukraine. Both countries have strengthened their trade and military ties amidst sanctions imposed by the United States and its allies.
