In the ongoing trial involving former President Donald Trump’s hush money, key developments have emerged, revealing inside accounts and legal strategies.
Hope Hicks, a former White House official and close aide to Trump, testified recently, offering insights into pivotal moments during the 2016 campaign.
Her testimony centred on Trump’s reaction to a damaging recording that surfaced just before the election, portraying a chaotic and critical phase for the campaign.
The trial, now entering its third week, has prosecutors focusing on star witness Michael Cohen, Trump’s former lawyer and fixer who previously pleaded guilty to federal charges related to hush money payments.
It has been reported that former US President Donald Trump is facing 34 felony charges related to allegations of falsifying business records.
These charges stem from payments made to individuals, including adult film actress Stormy Daniels, aimed at suppressing potentially embarrassing stories.
Prosecutors argue that the Trump Organization reimbursed Michael Cohen, Trump’s former personal attorney, for these payments.
They also claim that Cohen received bonuses and additional fees that were inaccurately recorded as legal expenses.
Trump has consistently maintained his innocence, denying any sexual encounters with the women involved and denying any wrongdoing in the handling of payments.
Throughout the trial, jurors have heard testimony from various witnesses, including a tabloid magazine publisher who acquired rights to stories about Trump to prevent their release and a Los Angeles lawyer who negotiated hush money deals on Trump’s behalf.
Trump’s defence team has sought to challenge the prosecution’s narrative, questioning whether Trump was possibly coerced into arranging payments to avoid public scandal.
Prosecutors, however, argue that the payments were part of a strategy to preserve Trump’s political viability during his presidential campaign.
This trial is one of four legal cases against Trump and is anticipated to be the only one to reach trial before the November election.
Other legal challenges against Trump include accusations of plotting to undermine the 2020 election and unlawfully hoarding classified documents post-presidency.
