Emma Atkinson, a 38-year-old heavily pregnant mother, tragically fell to her death from the tenth floor of a tower block in Leeds.

However, her baby daughter survived and is currently fighting for her life after being delivered posthumously in the hospital. While the precise circumstances surrounding Emma’s death remain unclear, it is believed she may have fallen accidentally while visiting her father’s flat, possibly leaning out of a window to smoke a cigarette.

Witnesses report that Emma’s father was present during the incident and watched in horror as she fell. Investigators are now exploring the theory that she opened the lounge window completely and leaned too far before toppling over.

While there was initial speculation that Emma may have taken her own life, friends have vehemently denied this, asserting that she was excited about becoming a mother again. Authorities have stated that there are no suspicious circumstances linked to her death.

Just two days before the incident, Emma learned she would become a grandmother for the first time, as her 17-year-old daughter Demi also announced her pregnancy.

Emma’s family noted that she had found happiness with her boyfriend, Michael Swanson, 33, a convicted burglar who served seven years in prison but has since vowed to change his ways and take on the responsibility of fatherhood for their newborn daughter.

A family friend emphasised that Emma had faced many challenges but was looking forward to her future. “She wasn’t depressed. She had no reason to take her own life. She was excited about her future,” the friend stated.

Residents of the tower block where the tragedy occurred have speculated that an accidental fall is plausible, particularly if someone was sitting on the window sill to smoke.

One resident explained to MailOnline, “The windows have a safety mechanism, but there is a catch you can flick to override that, and the window will open much wider—wide enough for a person to fall through.” They added that this incident is not the first of its kind at Shakespeare Tower and called for inspecting the window latches.

After Emma’s death, Michael Swanson committed to being a responsible father to their daughter, Posie. He previously served time for a series of burglaries in 2016 but has since expressed his determination to turn his life around.

His sister, Lauren Mitchell, shared an emotional message on social media, reassuring baby Posie of her mother’s pride and vowing to protect her.

Emma was due to give birth in ten weeks and had expressed joy at expecting a girl. Her eldest daughter Demi shared a heartfelt post on social media, featuring a photo of Posie in the hospital, saying, “Our perfect beautiful Posie fighting for her mummy, the last bit of our mama to treasure forever, she’s going to do this for you mum.”
