Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa has paid his respects to the late footballer Diogo Jota and his brother Andre, attending a solemn wake held in Gondomar on Tuesday.
The wake, which took place at a local church in the northern Portuguese city, drew close family members, friends, and notable figures from the footballing world. The two brothers tragically lost their lives in a car crash last week, sending shockwaves through both the national and international football communities.
Joining the president was Pedro Proença, president of the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF), who was also seen entering the church to offer his condolences.
Several professional footballers, past and present teammates of Diogo Jota, were in attendance. Among them were Joao Moutinho—Jota’s former teammate at both Wolverhampton Wanderers and the Portugal national team—and Jota Silva, who currently plays for Nottingham Forest and shares the same first name.
The presence of high-profile figures from sport and public life underscored the profound impact the Jota brothers had on those around them. The Portuguese football community remains in mourning as funeral arrangements continue.
