A tragic plane crash near Fife Airport in Kinglassie this morning has resulted in the death of the aircraft’s pilot, police have confirmed.
The incident occurred shortly before 12pm when emergency services were alerted to reports of a small aircraft crashing into a field near the airport. The plane, which had only just taken off from Fife Airport, reportedly made several “strange manoeuvres” before plummeting into a nearby meadow.
Police confirmed that the 50-year-old male pilot, whose identity has not yet been released, died at the scene. His next of kin have been notified. No other individuals were injured in the crash, authorities confirmed.
Local residents were left shaken by the incident, with one eyewitness recalling hearing a loud bang as the plane hit the ground. “There was a loud bang and two men who had been painting at the football pitch ran to see what had happened,” a Kinglassie local told The Scottish Sun. “It’s just terrible, knowing the plane took off from just over the hill at the airport. How frightening it must have been to witness that.”
The Kinglassie Miners Welfare and Bowling Club, located near the crash site, has been turned into a support hub for emergency services in the aftermath of the tragedy.
Both the police and the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service responded swiftly to the scene. A spokesperson for the fire service confirmed that they were alerted at 11:38am to an incident involving a light aircraft near Kinglassie. Two fire appliances and a heavy rescue unit were dispatched to assist in the recovery efforts.
A police presence remains at the site as investigators work to determine the cause of the crash. The incident has left the local community in shock, as authorities continue to piece together the events leading to the fatal crash.
