Mary Tillman, the mother of US hero and former NFL player Pat Tillman, has voiced her disapproval of ESPN’s decision to honour Prince Harry with the Pat Tillman Award.
The award, named after the late NFL safety-turned-Army Ranger who enlisted following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, is meant to recognize individuals who exemplify the spirit of service and sacrifice.

In an interview with the Daily Mail, Mary Tillman expressed her surprise and dissatisfaction with the choice, stating, “I am shocked as to why they would select such a controversial and divisive individual to receive the award.”
She emphasized that many deserving recipients have significantly contributed to the veteran community. “Individuals working in the veteran community are doing tremendous things to assist veterans,” she added.
Mary also highlighted that Prince Harry, already a public figure with numerous accolades, does not fit the typical profile of past awardees.
The Pat Tillman Award has historically been given to unsung heroes. One of them is last year’s recipients, the Buffalo Bills training staff who saved Damar Hamlin’s life after he suffered cardiac arrest during a game.

The decision has sparked controversy beyond Mary Tillman’s comments. ESPN analyst Pat McAfee criticized his network on his talk show, accusing ESPN of “trying to piss people off” with their choice. McAfee questioned the appropriateness of the selection, suggesting it undermines the award’s significance. “This is the most embarrassing thing I’ve seen in my life,” he said.

In defence of the selection, Kate Jackson, VP of Production at ESPN, praised the honorees for using their platforms to create positive change. “These honorees have used their platforms to change the world and make it more inclusive for marginalized and suffering communities, demonstrating incredible resilience, positivity, and perseverance,” Jackson stated.
Despite the controversy surrounding his royal life, Prince Harry has been recognized for his military service and efforts in founding the Invictus Games. The Games, launched in 2014, are a multi-sport event for wounded or injured service members and veterans. Upon learning of his selection, Harry dedicated the award to the entire service community, acknowledging their collective efforts and sacrifices.

The Pat Tillman Award, established in 2014, honours individuals who embody the legacy of Pat Tillman. Tillman, who left a successful NFL career to serve in the military, was killed by friendly fire in Afghanistan in 2004. He was posthumously awarded the Silver Star and Purple Heart for his bravery and service.
