During a three-hour live broadcast for Weight Watchers, Oprah Winfrey, who is 70, confessed that she had endorsed unsustainable weight loss methods throughout her career.
She reflected on her role in perpetuating diet culture through her talk show, magazine, and online platforms over the past 25 years.
One regretful moment Winfrey recalled was bringing out a red Radio Flyer wagon filled with 67 pounds of fat on “The Oprah Winfrey Show.”
This display symbolized the weight she had lost after undergoing an intense, months-long, liquid-only fast.
Acknowledging its harmful message, Winfrey expressed regret, stating that it set unrealistic standards and promoted unhealthy practices.
Joining Winfrey in the discussion were actresses Rebel Wilson, Amber Riley, Busy Philipps, WeightWatchers CEO Sima Sistani, and several doctors.
They explored the brand’s evolution from promoting dieting to focusing on overall health, including medical interventions such as prescription weight-loss drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy.
Winfrey emphasized the significance of having medically approved options for managing weight and improving health. She expressed relief and redemption in the availability of these treatments, contrasting it with the stigma and shame associated with weight management.
However, Winfrey’s involvement with WeightWatchers ended two months later when she resigned from the board of directors after nearly a decade of collaboration. She cited a desire to avoid conflicts of interest, particularly in light of her intentions to host a special about prescription weight-loss medications.
Winfrey clarified her decision, explaining that she wanted the freedom to discuss topics without concerns about potential biases or financial interests.
To further distance herself from perceived conflicts, she donated all her shares in WeightWatchers to the National Museum of African American History and Culture.
By taking accountability for her past promotions and aligning her actions with her values, Winfrey aimed to ensure transparency and integrity in her future endeavours.
