Former President Barack Obama is reportedly exerting pressure on President Joe Biden to reconsider his plans for seeking reelection in 2024, according to a recent report by the Washington Post.
Sources disclosed that Obama and Biden had communicated just once since Biden’s lacklustre debate performance on June 27, during which Obama expressed concerns over Biden’s diminished prospects against potential opponent Donald Trump.
The report indicates that Obama has contacted several Democratic leaders on Capitol Hill, including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer.
These discussions reportedly centred around growing fears within the Democratic Party about the upcoming elections and the potential for a significant defeat if Biden ran again at age 81.
While representatives for Obama did not immediately respond to requests for comment, sources close to the matter revealed that both Pelosi and Schumer have privately cautioned Biden about the risks of a landslide loss for Democrats in the next election. The conversations underscore deepening concerns among party leaders about Biden’s electoral viability amidst mounting challenges and criticisms.
