North Carolina Voters Reject Taylor Swift and Rally Behind Trump Following Her Harris Endorsement
Taylor Swift’s political endorsements appear to have struck a sour note with North Carolina voters, according to a new Victory Insights poll.
The survey, conducted from September 16 to 18, polled 600 likely general election voters in the pivotal swing state and found that many respondents were unhappy with the pop star’s foray into politics.
The poll revealed that 30% of respondents rated Swift a “1” on a scale of 1 to 5, signalling an “extremely negative” opinion of the singer following her recent endorsement in the presidential race.
An additional 9% rated her a “2,” further indicating dislike. In total, nearly 40% of North Carolina voters hold a negative view of Swift, a figure that outpaces her support among the same group.
Despite the poll’s sample including 4% more Democrats than Republicans, only 31% of respondents viewed Swift positively after she aligned with Vice President Kamala Harris, becoming part of what is known as the “KHive.” Additionally, almost 30% of voters expressed neutrality, showing apathy toward Swift’s political involvement.
The poll also highlighted that Swift is now less prevalent in the state than tech billionaire Elon Musk, who recently made headlines for offering an unsolicited and controversial comment about Swift. Musk enjoys a favorability rating of 35%, with 39% viewing him unfavourably.
In contrast to Swift’s declining reputation, former President Donald Trump fared much better in the same poll. Trump leads Vice President Harris 49% to 45% in North Carolina, a significant edge over his slim 0.3% lead in other state-wide averages. Independents were a key factor in Trump’s lead, with 43% supporting him compared to just 27% for Harris.
However, Trump’s popularity doesn’t seem to be helping North Carolina’s Republican Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson in his bid for governor.
The poll showed Democratic candidate Josh Stein leading Robinson 47% to 42%. The key to Robinson’s path may be converting undecided Trump voters, who account for 7% of the sample. Additionally, 2% of respondents said they support Trump for president but Stein for governor, while 0.5% identified as Harris-Robinson supporters.
As Swift’s political reputation suffers in North Carolina, the state remains a battleground where presidential and gubernatorial races are expected to be closely contested in 2024.
