Nigeria’s Folashade Oluwafemiayo has shattered her own World Record in the women’s over 86kg Para-Powerlifting category, lifting an impressive 166kg.
This surpasses her previous record of 165kg, and she has also secured a gold medal with this achievement.
Oluwafemiayo’s performance adds to Nigeria’s total of seven medals at the Paralympics, showcasing the country’s strong presence in the games.
This achievement follows a successful weekend for Nigerian sports, with the Super Eagles defeating Benin Republic 3-0 in an AFCON qualifier match at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo. Additionally, Nigeria’s U20 Women’s team advanced to the Round of 16 at the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup with goals from Amina Bello, Chiamaka Okwuchukwu, Flourish Sabastine, and Joy Igbokwe in their 4-1 victory over Venezuela.
In other Paralympic news, Flora Ugwunwa earned a silver medal in the Women’s Javelin F54 category with a throw of 19.26 meters, while Bose Omolayo secured silver in the Women’s 79kg Para-Powerlifting by lifting 145kg. Isau Ogunkunle also made history as the first Nigerian to win an individual medal in Para Table Tennis since the Sydney 2000 Games, earning a bronze in the Men’s Singles Class 4 event.
Senator Enoh expressed pride in the Nigerian Paralympic athletes, highlighting their dedication and the nation’s commitment to supporting para-sports. The Minister reaffirmed the government’s support for creating an inclusive environment for all athletes, emphasizing that disability is not a limitation and praising the athletes for their inspiring achievements.
