A Federal High Court in Lagos has sentenced the celebrity transgender Idris Okuneye, also known as Bobrisky, to six months in jail without the option of a fine.
Bobrisky was convicted by Justice Abimbola Awogboro on Friday, April 5, 2024, for abusing and mutilating Naira notes following his arrest and arraignment by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The sentencing date was set after Bobrisky pleaded guilty to a four-count charge of tampering with N490,000 through spraying, as brought against him by the EFCC.
Justice Awogboro stated that the judgement would serve as a deterrent to others who abuse and mutilate the Nigerian currency.
The Judge ordered that the jail term begin on March 24, 2024, the day of Bobrisky’s arrest.
A mild drama occurred in the courtroom before the sentence was pronounced when the Judge asked about Bobrisky’s gender, to which he quickly replied that he was a man.
