Meta Platforms Incorporated, headed by former UK Deputy Prime Minister and Meta’s President of Global Affairs, Sir Nick Clegg, has announced plans to introduce a new feature on its Instagram app to empower Nigerian creators to monetize their content.
Set to be unveiled in June 2024, this feature will allow indigenous content creators to earn a livelihood through the platform.
Sir Nick Clegg disclosed this during a visit to President Bola Tinubu at the State House in Abuja on Thursday, underscoring Meta’s commitment to deepening partnerships with Nigeria.
President Tinubu, in his response, emphasized his administration’s determination to position Nigeria as the beacon of information and communications technology (ICT) in Africa.
He highlighted ongoing efforts by the Federal Government to invest in digital technology, thereby bolstering the sustainability of small businesses and fostering opportunities across various sectors.
According to a statement from his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, President Tinubu stressed Nigeria’s imperative to embrace technological advancements to remain globally competitive.
President Tinubu reiterated the crucial role of Nigerian youth in propelling the country’s digital economic growth. He emphasized critical initiatives like the 3MTT program, which aims to equip three million Nigerian youths with digital technology and essential skills, preparing them to compete in the global economy.
President Tinubu emphasized Nigeria’s readiness to lead Africa in digital technology through collaboration for mutual benefit and leveraging technology for growth and prosperity among micro-businesses.
Nick Clegg, the former deputy Prime Minister of the UK, expressed his gratitude to President Tinubu for facilitating the landing of a Meta-backed deep-sea cable in Nigeria through an executive order. He emphasized the importance of this infrastructure project, which is expected to improve connectivity and boost economic activity throughout Africa significantly.
