Nigeria Immigration Service Suspends Officer for Soliciting Money from Traveller

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has suspended Okpravero Ufuoma, an assistant superintendent of immigration (ASI II), for allegedly soliciting money from a traveller.

NIS Comptroller-General Kemi Nandap announced this in a statement issued by the immigration’s spokesman, Kenneth Udo, on Thursday.

The suspension comes after a video circulated on social media showing Ufuoma soliciting money from a traveller. The video, titled ‘This is how immigration officers treat tourists in Nigeria,’ sparked outrage and highlighted misconduct within the NIS.

According to Ms. Nandap, Ufuoma’s conduct does not reflect the values and ethics of professionalism upheld by the NIS.

Ms Nandap condemned the alleged misconduct, stating it undermines ongoing reforms to enhance service standards.

She assured the public that Ufuoma has been indefinitely suspended pending the outcome of disciplinary procedures by the law and Public Service Rules. “This disgraceful act does not represent our commitment to hospitality, reception, and courtesy,” she said.

The NIS chief reiterated the organization’s commitment to identifying and removing corrupt elements within its ranks, emphasizing the agency’s zero-tolerance policy for corruption. She assured that the NIS would continue to strive for excellence in service delivery, aligning with the federal government’s ‘Renewed Hope Agenda.’

To prevent similar incidents, Ms. Nandap announced that electronic gates (e-gates) are installed at all international airports to facilitate smoother passenger travel. She urged the public to report any misconduct or corruption by NIS officers to the appropriate authorities.

The NIS’s swift action underscores its dedication to maintaining integrity and professionalism within its ranks, aiming to restore public trust and ensure a welcoming environment for all travellers.
