Israel’s military confirmed the killing of senior Hezbollah leader Ibrahim Aqil, a key figure responsible for a series of deadly bombings in the 1980s that claimed the lives of over 300 Americans.

Aqil, also known by his alias “Tahsin,” was a prominent member of Hezbollah’s top military unit, the Jihad Council, and was targeted in an intelligence-led strike in Beirut, according to the Israel Défense Forces (IDF).

The IDF reported that Aqil, along with other commanders, had been planning a new attack on Israel, aiming to kidnap and murder civilians, similar to the brutal October 7 massacre.

“The IDF will continue to neutralise Hezbollah’s threats and operate across all fronts to protect Israeli citizens,” the statement said.

Aqil had been a principal figure in the 1983 bombings of the U.S. embassy and Marine barracks in Beirut, which resulted in the deaths of 63 people and 241 U.S. military personnel. Last year, the U.S. government offered a $7 million reward for information leading to his capture.
