A criminal was caught on camera attacking a judge during his sentencing hearing in a Las Vegas courtroom. The newly convicted Deobra Delone Redden, who was being sentenced for aggravated battery with substantial bodily harm following a previous guilty plea, leapt over the bench towards Judge Mary Kay Holthus after she denied him bail. In the footage of the incident, he can be heard shouting ‘Nah, f*** that, bitch’ shortly before the violence erupted.

The attack lasted for more than 30 seconds, and despite the efforts of marshals to pull him away, Redden was able to inflict injuries on the judge. A court marshal was also injured and had to be taken to hospital. The court staff can cry out for help as Redden repeatedly punches the judge. The attack only ended when a staff member at the court said, ‘She hit her head hard.’

The Las Vegas District Court issued a statement commending the heroic acts of its staff, law enforcement, and all others who subdued the defendant. The court remains committed to a safe and secure courthouse and courtrooms. It is reviewing all its protocols and will do whatever is necessary to protect the judiciary, the public, and employees.

The Nevada Attorney General’s office tweeted its well wishes to Judge Mary Kay Holthus and the marshal injured in her courtroom. The dedication to justice and the court by both is genuinely commendable. They wished both a swift recovery.
