Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi shared her perspective on the proposed debate between President Biden and former President Donald Trump.
“I would never recommend going on stage with Donald Trump, but the president has decided that’s what he wants to do,” Pelosi stated, adding, “I think the format he is suggesting is a good one.”
Biden and Trump have agreed to two debates, one on June 27 hosted by CNN and another on Sept. 10 hosted by ABC. The Biden-Harris campaign proposed that the debates occur inside a TV studio, with microphones that automatically cut off when a speaker’s time limit elapses.
Pelosi preferred “separate town hall meetings” instead of a traditional debate format, which allowed the audience to question each candidate directly about the future.

Reflecting on the intense final debate between Trump and Biden in 2020, Pelosi highlighted concerns about Trump’s behaviour on the debate stage, referencing his demeanour during the 2016 debates with former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
During the 2016 debates, Clinton described feeling unsettled as Trump loomed behind her on stage, a moment she recounted in her book What Happened. She wrote that Trump’s behaviour was inappropriate and made her consider telling him to “back up.”

Says there should be separate townhalls instead
Biden’s willingness to debate with Trump coincides with recent polls indicating Trump’s lead in five out of six battleground states. Despite Biden’s announcement, Trump responded with criticism, stating, “Crooked Joe Biden is the worst debater I have ever faced — he can’t put two sentences together.”
When approached by Fox News Digital, the Trump campaign did not comment on Biden’s debate challenge.
