WASHINGTON — Elon Musk has reignited his public feud with President Donald Trump, launching fresh attacks on the administration’s sweeping tax and spending legislation just weeks after their high-profile fallout.
The world’s richest man took to his social media platform X, warning that Republican lawmakers who support the so-called “Big Beautiful Bill” would face political consequences.
“Those who campaigned on cutting spending but voted for this monstrosity should hang their heads in shame — and they will lose their primary next year if it’s the last thing I do on this Earth,” Musk wrote Sunday.
The Tesla and SpaceX CEO, who has become an influential figure in US politics, also vowed to publicly name and shame lawmakers backing the bill, threatening to plaster their faces on posters labelling them as “liars” who voted to add $5 trillion to the national debt.
Trump Fires Back Over Subsidy Claims
President Trump wasted little time responding, accusing Musk of hypocrisy and claiming his companies have benefited more than anyone from US government subsidies.
“Without subsidies, Elon would probably have to close up shop and head back home to South Africa,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
The president added that halting subsidies for Musk’s ventures could result in “big money to be saved” for taxpayers, questioning whether the newly formed Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) — led by Musk himself — should scrutinise the billionaire’s businesses.
Billionaire’s Spending Concerns Fuel Rift
Musk, who reportedly spent $250 million supporting Trump’s re-election bid, was appointed to head DOGE earlier this year, where he led aggressive efforts to downsize the federal workforce, cutting an estimated 120,000 jobs.

He argues that the gains made through those cuts are being wiped out by the spending provisions in the tax and spending package, which he has described as “utterly insane and destructive.”
During the Senate’s ongoing deliberations, Musk aimed at the political establishment, claiming, “We live in a one-party country — the PORKY PIG PARTY!!”
He also floated the idea of forming a new political party “that cares about the people.”
History of Clashing, Regrets Over Epstein Post
The latest exchange follows weeks of rising tensions between Trump and Musk, which began when Musk branded the president’s legislation a “disgusting abomination.”
Musk’s criticism escalated when he implied in a now-deleted post that Trump’s name appeared in documents related to disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein.
However, Musk later walked back those claims, admitting his rhetoric went too far.
“I regret some of my posts about President @realDonaldTrump last week,” Musk wrote. “They went too far.”
Trump, in comments to the New York Post, appeared to accept the olive branch, saying: “I thought it was very nice that he did that.”
Despite the brief de-escalation, Musk’s latest attacks suggest their rivalry — fueled by differences over spending, national debt, and political loyalty — is far from over.
