MSNBC host Ari Melber expressed surprise when Gordon Sondland, a former Trump administration official who testified against Donald Trump during his impeachment inquiry, declared that he would support Trump again due to dissatisfaction with the current Biden-Harris administration.

Sondland, a wealthy hotelier and major Republican donor, served as Trump’s ambassador to the European Union.

He played a crucial role as a witness in the House Democrats’ impeachment inquiry in 2019, where he testified about a purported “quid pro quo” agreement between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, suggesting that military aid to Ukraine was contingent on investigating the Bidens and the 2016 election.

During the interview, Melber presented a clip of Sondland, who had stated he was finished supporting Trump after the events of January 6, and asked if he maintained that position.

In a surprising turn, Sondland responded, “No, I don’t stand by it and I’ll tell you why,” explaining that four years under the Biden-Harris policies had convinced him that their governance posed an “existential threat” to both American society and its allies.

Melber interrupted Sondland, highlighting the inconsistency between his prior statements after January 6 and his current endorsement of Trump. “You said it was a ‘no for me’ after that, and here we are right now and you’re saying it’s a yes for you?” Melber pointed out. Sondland confirmed his support, stating emphatically, “It’s a yes for me.

It is an absolute yes for me,” attributing his decision to the perceived failures of the Biden-Harris administration.

The dialogue continued as Melber probed Sondland about the significance of his stance, noting that Sondland had previously acknowledged the gravity of the January 6 attack on democracy.

Sondland countered by claiming to have observed numerous attacks on democracy that eclipsed the events of that day.

After this exchange, Melber allowed Sarah Matthews, a former deputy White House press secretary backing Harris, to respond.

Matthews expressed that she views Trump as a threat to U.S. democracy, indicating her decision to vote based on this perspective rather than specific policies.

In response, Sondland argued that policy decisions play a crucial role in shaping the nation’s functioning and lifestyle.

“He admitted that Trump’s actions regarding January 6 were insufficient. He stated that the former president “should have admitted he lost the election and moved on.”

Nevertheless, Sondland maintained that the last four years under Biden had ultimately led him to renew his support for Trump.”

Sondland had previously testified before Congress that he acted on the orders of Trump’s lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, revealing that military aid to Ukraine was linked to demands for investigations into the Bidens and the 2016 election.

He stated, “Mr. Giuliani’s requests were a quid pro quo for arranging a White House visit for President Zelensky.

Mr. Giuliani demanded that Ukraine make a public statement announcing investigations of the 2016 election/DNC server and Burisma.”
