A 30-year-old mother named Christina Robinson was found guilty in a terrible case of killing her three-year-old son, Dwelaniyah. In November 2022, something happened at their home in Bracken Court, Ushaw Moor, Durham.

Robinson faced accusations of causing fatal injuries to her son through violent shaking alongside four counts of child cruelty.

Newcastle Crown Court heard distressing details of the case, including instances of scalding and caning inflicted upon the young child in what was described as ‘sadistic cruelty’.

The prosecution revealed that Robinson immersed her son in scalding water, resulting in severe burns and unimaginable pain in the weeks leading up to his tragic demise. Despite admitting to hitting her son with a bamboo cane, Robinson claimed to have been following a scripture from the Bible advocating for the use of physical discipline for children.

She cited her affiliation with the Black Hebrew Israelite religion and justified her actions by stating her son’s misbehaviour with food as the reason for punishment.

During the trial, it emerged that Robinson was the only adult present in the house when her son suffered the fatal brain injury.

Shockingly, instead of seeking immediate medical assistance, she delayed contacting emergency services for 20 minutes, during which she searched online for child resuscitation techniques and called her husband, who was away working for the RAF.

Despite appearing composed upon the arrival of paramedics, attempts to save Dwelaniyah were unsuccessful. A post-mortem examination revealed a pattern of deliberate assaults and non-accidental injuries inflicted upon the young boy.

Prosecutor Richard Wright KC described the ordeal as a “campaign of violence and cruelty” inflicted by Robinson upon her child for trivial reasons.

Mr Justice Garnham acknowledged the emotional toll the trial had taken on the jury and expressed gratitude for their service. Sentencing for Christina Robinson is scheduled for May 24.
