The mother of a 6-year-old has been charged after her son brought a loaded handgun to Geeter Elementary School in Memphis, Tennessee, and distributed it among other students, court records reveal.
Ke’Erinie King, 22, faces multiple charges, including child abuse, child neglect or endangerment, carrying a weapon on school property, and contributing to the delinquency of a minor, according to an affidavit.
Police were called to the school on August 5 following reports of an armed individual on the premises. A county resource officer informed authorities that the 6-year-old had a handgun in class, which he was reportedly passing around to his peers. A school staff member retrieved the weapon from the student’s backpack before police arrived.
Upon investigation, officers found that the firearm was stolen, as confirmed by its serial number. During questioning, King allegedly admitted that the handgun was hers and that she had purchased it from an “unknown person,” the affidavit states.
King has been taken into custody but has since been released without bail.
