Migrants Traveling to Ireland from UK Sign of Rwanda Scheme Success, Says Rishi Sunak
Migrants travelling to Ireland after reaching the UK via small boats indicate the effectiveness of the Rwanda scheme as a deterrent, according to Rishi Sunak.
In an interview with Sky News’s Trevor Phillips, Sunak responded to concerns about migrants reaching Ireland, suggesting that it showed the deterrent effect was already in motion.
Ireland’s deputy prime minister, Micheal Martin, stated that the threat of deportation to Rwanda had led to an increase in migrants crossing the border from Northern Ireland into the Republic.
During the interview, scheduled to air on Sky’s Sunday Morning With Trevor Phillips, Sunak emphasized the impact of the deterrent, noting that people are becoming wary of coming to the UK illegally.
Downing Street dismissed claims that the Rwanda plan influenced movements in Ireland, stating that concluding its impact was premature.
Sunak highlighted the global challenge of illegal migration, suggesting that other countries may adopt similar approaches to address the issue.
Meanwhile, Martin suggested that the policy already impacted Ireland, with individuals fearful of remaining in the UK.
He noted that asylum seekers seek sanctuary in Ireland and the European Union rather than facing potential deportation to Rwanda.
Martin’s comments followed estimates from Ireland’s justice minister, indicating that over 80% of migrants in the Republic had crossed from Northern Ireland.
During the interview, the UK’s prime minister reiterated his focus on securing the UK’s border.
The Safety of Rwanda Bill transitioned into law on Thursday, with Number 10 announcing the booking of the first deportation plane on the same day.
Despite delays, the bill passed in parliament and received royal assent earlier in the week, marking a significant step in the government’s efforts to curb illegal immigration.
Looking ahead, Prime Minister Boris Johnson assured that the first deportation flights would take off within 10 to 12 weeks, regardless of any obstacles.
