Fans at the University of Michigan stadium booed Minnesota Governor Tim Walz on Saturday as his motorcade delayed their entry to the Wolverine’s game against Minnesota.
The governor’s arrival forced the fans to wait in the rain, which fueled their displeasure.
The situation escalated as some of the drenched fans began chanting “Tampon Time,” referencing a law Walz signed in Minnesota that provides free tampons in schools, including boys’ restrooms.
While there were supporters holding signs in favor of Walz and Vice President Kamala Harris, the hefty security detail accompanying the Democratic vice-presidential nominee prompted further booing.
Michigan fans waited up to 30 minutes before they were allowed into the stadium.
One fan voiced their frustration on TikTok, saying, “VP Candidate Tim Walz pissed off Michigan fans.”
Representatives for the Michigan football team did not immediately respond to questions regarding the delayed entry caused by Walz’s motorcade.
Despite being from Minnesota, the home state of the rival team, Walz arrived early to tailgate with Michigan fans.
He has often highlighted his experience coaching high school football on the campaign trail.
Walz attempted to run onto the field to greet Michigan’s head coach, Sherrone Moore but was unsuccessful and settled for a hug from the Minnesota Golden Gophers mascot.
After Michigan’s 27-24 victory over the University of Minnesota, Walz had little to say about the game.
Walz’s appearance at the game is expected to be his last major campaign event before the upcoming vice-presidential debate against JD Vance.
Following the game, Walz plans to head to northern Michigan for final preparations ahead of the debate, according to a source who spoke with the Associated Press.
