Meghan arrived an hour late to co-host a Women in Leadership event, leaving Harry behind, as friends disclosed that her husband was “deeply stung” not to meet the King during their visit to the UK.
The Sussexes are currently on the third day of a three-day “faux Royal” tour of Nigeria, where they have visited a warzone, played volleyball, and even stood up for God Save The King.
During a speech at the event in Abuja on Saturday, Meghan expressed her gratitude for the warm welcome she and her husband received in the country, referring to Nigeria as “my country.”
She stated, “I am flattered, honoured, and inspired by our reception since arriving here. It has been a whirlwind 24 hours.”
Meghan also mentioned that she quickly realised the need to wear more colourful outfits to blend in with the locals and their incredible fashion sense.
In past interviews, Meghan talked about her preference for wearing beige tones, explaining that she wore muted colours in the UK to blend in.
Following a genealogy test that revealed she is 43 per cent Nigerian, Meghan shared her excitement with her mother, highlighting the importance of discovering her heritage and background.
Royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams believes Meghan’s discovery of Nigerian ancestry has given her a sense of belonging. Still, he also raised concerns about how the Royal Family has managed the Sussexes’ “faux-royal” tour.
However, there are significant concerns surrounding the handling of the Sussexes’ tour.
It is evident that a lot is happening behind the scenes, and one cannot help but feel that there is a level of exploitation in how they have built up and used publicity for their Nigerian trip.
Buckingham Palace is likely to have a great deal of concern regarding this.
The unpredictability of the Sussexes is something the Royal Family finds challenging to deal with. It is unwise to underestimate them, as their actions are often unexpected.
During his visit to London, it was understood that the King had agreed to accommodate Harry.
However, for unknown reasons, the Duke of Sussex stayed in a hotel instead. This missed opportunity deeply affected Harry, as he had hoped to see his father.
Considering their proximity, the logistics would have been much easier if he had stayed in a royal residence.
The Sussexes arrived in Abuja on Friday morning to promote the Invictus Games. This event, founded by Prince Harry, celebrates its 10th anniversary this year and involves injured servicemen and women competing in various athletics events. Their tour began with a visit to Lightway Academy, a primary and secondary school in the capital.
Prince Harry showcased his competitive side at an Invictus Games sitting volleyball event, following in the footsteps of his brother, Prince William, who also tried his hand at the sport.
Additionally, the couple attended a charity event where they were seen standing for God Save The King. They also visited Nigeria’s defence HQ to meet military wives and senior officials.
Overall, the Sussexes’ tour has raised questions and concerns, and their actions continue to surprise and challenge the Royal Family.
