Marseille forward Mason Greenwood has broken his silence after being unexpectedly snubbed from the shortlist for Ligue 1’s Player of the Year award, despite a standout debut season in France.
The 23-year-old former Manchester United winger, who joined Marseille in the summer of 2024, has made a significant impact at Stade Velodrome.

Greenwood has scored 18 goals and contributed four assists, keeping the French giants in contention for a second-place finish behind champions Paris Saint-Germain and a vital Champions League qualification spot.
His performances have included several spectacular goals, and he currently sits second in the race for the Golden Boot, trailing only PSG star Ousmane Dembele.
However, Greenwood’s name was absent when Ligue 1’s Player of the Year nominations were announced – and notably, no Marseille players made the shortlist at all.
Despite the omission, Greenwood remained composed when addressing the media. “I don’t worry about it. I’m just focused on getting Marseille into the Champions League,” he said.
The England international, who is reportedly switching allegiance to Jamaica, was previously honoured as Getafe’s Player of the Year during his loan spell in La Liga last season.
The decision to exclude Greenwood and his Marseille teammates from individual recognition has sparked surprise, even among players.
Midfielder Geoffrey Kondogbia expressed his bemusement, telling reporters: “We kind of laughed about it. Quite honestly, I don’t know what to say. It’s a choice, and we have to respect it.
We have our own opinion of our players and our coach, and that’s the most important thing. There’s no accounting for taste. We would have liked to have been there because it’s always a pleasure.”

While Greenwood will not be lifting the Player of the Year trophy, the award will be decided between several high-profile Ligue 1 names.
PSG’s Ousmane Dembele, Desire Doue, Vitinha and Achraf Hakimi are all in the running, alongside Lyon’s talented playmaker Rayan Cherki.
Greenwood’s focus now shifts to helping Marseille finish the season strongly, as they aim to secure a Champions League spot and close out a campaign in which he has emerged as one of their key attacking assets – even if the Ligue 1 award panels failed to take notice.
