February 17, 2025 — Manchester United could receive a £31m windfall if Mason Greenwood transfers from Marseille to Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), according to reports.
The 23-year-old forward joined Marseille last summer in a £26.6m deal after a season-long loan at Getafe.
His impressive form—14 goals and three assists in 22 matches—has reportedly attracted interest from PSG, which has formally offered him €75m (£62m).
Man Utd’s 50% Sell-On Clause
As part of Greenwood’s transfer to Marseille, Man Utd negotiated a 50% sell-on clause. This means that if PSG’s offer is accepted, United will receive €37.5m (£31m) from the transfer fee.
The financial boost comes at a crucial time for Man Utd, as the club aims to comply with Premier League profit and sustainability rules (PSR). The PSR regulations, which limit clubs’ spending relative to their income, remain in place following Man City’s successful legal challenge against proposed changes.
Greenwood’s Career at Man Utd and Exit
Greenwood was suspended by Manchester United in January 2022 following allegations of attempted rape and assault after images and videos surfaced online.
However, in February 2023, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) announced that the case had been discontinued due to the withdrawal of key witnesses and new evidence.
Despite this, Man Utd co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe stated last year that the club had decided Greenwood would continue his career away from Old Trafford.
Man Utd’s Financial Implications
Former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson commented on how financial regulations impact United, suggesting that a squad cost ratio (SCR) system, which was initially proposed but later scrapped, could have benefited the club more than the current PSR model.
Borson explained that under UEFA’s financial rules, clubs competing in European competitions must limit their squad costs to 70% of revenue. If Man Utd were in a lower-tier tournament like the Europa Conference League, the financial restrictions could have been more severe.
“If you win the Europa Conference, you’re probably making around £10m total, but you have significant travel and squad costs for 15 matches. That’s a challenge clubs need to consider,” Borson told Football Insider.
With the PSR system remaining in place, United’s potential £31m earnings from Greenwood’s transfer could play a vital role in their financial stability and future transfer activities.
