Man Jailed in Dublin for Seven Years After Raping Landlady Paralyzed by Drugging
A man who raped his landlady in Dublin after she was drugged and incapacitated has been sentenced to seven years in prison. Dmitrus Aleinkovs, 31, was convicted of one count of rape at the Central Criminal Court in October.
The court heard that the victim, who had been socialising with Aleinkovs and others before the attack, was drugged by a courier who delivered cocaine and alcohol to her. She found herself paralysed yet fully awake and aware of her surroundings.
In her vulnerable state, the victim was first sexually assaulted by the courier, who removed her clothing, raped her, and then left her, arranging her body and covering her with a cushion.
Aleinkovs later entered the room and, seeing her in a helpless condition, also raped her. The victim, despite being unable to move, internally screamed and tried to communicate with her eyes, hoping for help. Aleinkovs continued the assault, which lasted five minutes but felt like an eternity to the victim.
Afterwards, Aleinkovs dressed the woman and left the room. Only later, when she regained some mobility, did she manage to alert her father and raise the alarm. Gardaí subsequently launched an investigation into the crime. Aleinkovs fled Ireland and returned to Latvia before he was charged. He was deported back to Ireland in December 2022, where he faced trial.
During sentencing, Ms Justice Karen O’Connor described Aleinkovs’s behaviour as “degrading and humiliating” and noted that the victim had been left powerless by someone who took advantage of her vulnerability.
The judge stressed that the woman had trusted Aleinkovs, who had been living in her home, and described the attack as a significant breach of trust. The victim had hoped Aleinkovs would help her, but instead, he subjected her to further humiliation and assault.
In her victim impact statement, the woman said that her life had been “irrecoverably changed.” She described living in a constant state of fear and anxiety, struggling with panic attacks and sleep paralysis. The emotional scars from the attack remain, and she expressed feeling worthless and as though she had been discarded after the assault. She also expressed concern for her family, who has lived in “constant worry” since the incident.
The victim also thanked the Gardaí for their efforts to locate the first attacker, who remains unidentified. Despite the extensive search, the courier who initially assaulted her has not been found. Ms Justice O’Connor acknowledged the courage it took for the victim to provide her statement in court and endure the trauma of the trial process.
Aleinkovs, who had initially fled the country after the attack, had provided a DNA sample and made a voluntary statement to Gardaí. He was convicted for his role in the attack, and a European Arrest Warrant was issued for his extradition.
Aleinkovs had been living with the victim after she had sublet part of her house to him, and there had been prior consensual sexual intimacy between them. However, this ended after Aleinkovs objected to paying rent due to their relationship.
Despite the mitigating circumstances, including Aleinkovs’s situation, the court imposed a seven-year sentence, backdated to December 2022, when he was first taken into custody. The sentence reflects the gravity of the attack, considering the victim’s vulnerability and the breach of trust in the relationship.
