A man who asked flight attendants to join him in the mile-high club on a Spirit Airlines flight could face up to 20 years in prison. He also allegedly grabbed them and asked about the cockpit.
James Warren Finnister, 47, drank shots on the flight from Louisville, Kentucky, to Orlando, Florida, on Tuesday before making the sexual proposition. According to the complaint, he was moved three times and lay on the floor.
He also pulled one of the flight attendants into his seat and asked questions about entering the cockpit, which alarmed her.
He was arrested by the FBI at Orlando International Airport and claimed he had no memory of his actions. He said he drank to calm his nerves because it was his first flight.
He told The Daily Beast: ‘I woke up to an FBI agent sitting beside me. I’m trying to get up, and he says, ‘You need to sit down.’ I said, ‘What’s up? What did I do?”
He was released on bond on Wednesday and denied the charges. He said he was asleep for most of the flight.
He said: ‘When I first walked in the plane, I made a joke – I said, ‘This one of those mile-high flights?’ They laughed and sat me by the window, [because] it was my first time flying… I was talking to a father and son next to me. We took off, I saw the clouds, and I fell asleep for two hours.
The federal prosecution said Finnister never sat in his assigned seat and asked the lead flight attendant to join the mile-high club, a term for having sex on a plane1. ‘I asked about the cockpit, like, is this the cockpit up here? I had never been on a plane, and I wanted to have a look. And so they took me to jail. The charges are so bogus. It ain’t no charge.’
He also grabbed another flight attendant and repeated the question. He then lay down on the floor and had to be picked up by the crew.
The mile-high club is a slang term for people who have had sex on a plane. Spirit Airlines is a low-cost carrier that operates flights to the US, the Caribbean and Latin America234.
