A man has died and a child has been injured following a shooting incident at the Fairgreen Shopping Centre in Carlow town, authorities have confirmed.
The incident occurred shortly after 6.15 pm on Sunday. Gardaí believe the man’s wounds were self-inflicted. His body remains at the scene pending a full safety assessment.
Emergency services, including police, ambulance and fire crews, responded quickly to the incident. A helicopter was also seen hovering above the area.

The child, a girl, received treatment from paramedics at the scene. Gardaí have stated that her injuries did not require hospitalisation, though it remains unclear how exactly they were sustained.
The shopping centre has been fully evacuated, and a large cordon remains in place. As a precaution, the Army’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team has been called to the scene.
A Garda spokesperson said: “At this time, there is no further concern for public safety.”
Authorities are urging members of the public who may have footage of the incident not to share it online or via messaging apps, but to instead provide it directly to investigators.
Ireland’s Minister for Justice, Jim O’Callaghan, has expressed his shock at the event and solidarity with those affected. “My thoughts are with everyone impacted,” he said. “This is something we never want or expect to happen in our communities. Gun violence is very rare in Ireland, and I am determined that it will remain the case.”
Investigations are ongoing.
