M10News – A man from Spalding, Lincolnshire, is in a legal dispute over a £1,000,000 scratchcard with his ex-girlfriend that they allegedly bought together before breaking up.
Michael Cartlidge, 39, says he and Charlotte Cox, 37, purchased the Lotto card at a Nisa store in February 2024 after he suggested the idea and tried to transfer her money.
He claims that Ms Cox, who scratched the card and revealed the jackpot, initially agreed to share the prize with him but changed her mind weeks after ending their three-month relationship.
Mr Cartlidge, a security engineer, says he has a moral right to half of the money and is considering taking legal action against Ms Cox, who has been declared the sole winner by the new lottery owners, Allwyn.
He told The Sun: “I am in shock. I can openly admit that we wouldn’t have got that ticket without Charlotte, but she wouldn’t have got it without me.”
Ms Cox, a mother-of-one, denies Mr Cartlidge’s claims and says he has no entitlement to the money. A source close to her told the publication: “He’s talking rubbish. He has no right to the jackpot. She paid for it and scratched it. It’s hers.”
The case is reminiscent of another lottery dispute 2018, when a woman from Swindon gave away a scratchcard to a shopkeeper, only to find out later that it was worth £80,000. She accused the shopkeeper of fraud and demanded the money back, but he claimed he had already thrown away the card.
