Man Arrested in Connection to Death of Gogglebox Star George Gilbey

A man in his 40s has been apprehended in connection to the tragic death of Gogglebox star George Gilbey, who passed away earlier this week.

The 40-year-old Gilbey met his demise in what was initially labelled as a freak ‘work accident’ in Shoebury, Southend-on-Sea, on Wednesday morning.

Essex Police, while not formally identifying the Channel 4 personality, confirmed responding to an incident involving a man falling from a height and subsequently succumbing to his injuries at the scene. The vicinity surrounding EGL Homecare, where Gilbey was employed, has been cordoned off as investigations persist.

In an official statement, authorities stated, “As part of our ongoing investigation into the death of a man in Campfield Road, Shoebury, on Wednesday, 27 March, we have arrested a man in their 40s from the Witham area on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter.

This is a joint investigation with the Health and Safety Executive, and our enquiries are ongoing.”

The untimely passing of Gilbey was confirmed by his sister via social media, expressing her grief: “Rest in eternal paradise, brother. Far too young, but god only takes the best.”

George Gilbey rose to fame in September 2013 as a cast member of Gogglebox, alongside his mother Linda and late stepfather Pete, who passed away in 2021.

He later participated in Celebrity Big Brother, finishing fourth in 2014, before returning to Gogglebox with his family until his departure two years later.

The Gilbey family was devastated by the recent loss of their loved one, but they received an outpouring of support and tributes from fans and colleagues.

Ricci Guarnaccio, Gilbey’s co-star from Celebrity Big Brother, paid his respects by saying, “It breaks my heart, but you are well and truly going to be missed, my friend.”

Gilbey’s social media activity just days before the incident showcased his enthusiasm for returning to physical fitness, underscoring the suddenness and tragedy of his passing.
